In September 2013,the PAWS team had a very busy and exciting trip to Paxos. We are delighted to report that the new surgery is up and running and is a great success. The surgery comprises a reception area, consultation room, prep room and operating room. Aided by funding from Dogs Trust UK and other sponsors, PAWS was able to buy a new operating table and anaesthetic machine. Anaesthesia using an oxygen concentrator is a wonderful system and will be a huge step forward in improving animal welfare on Paxos. It was specially built for PAWS by Albert Walker of AW Anaesthesia who came to Paxos for 3 days to set everything up for us.
The machine was put to immediate use when PAWS operated on 9 dogs during the second week and over 20 cats.
Russell Lyon and his wife Chris were the principal vet team and were assisted by Lindsay for 2 weeks and joined by vet Jonathan Yeatts for the second week. The team worked very well together and at all times were supported by Faye Lychnou who lives close to the surgery and was always at hand to help. The new clinic attracted a lot of new customers with their animals plus many passers-by who were interested to see the new clinic. Without exception, everyone was very impressed with the new surgery and were generous with their comments and donations.
An official opening party was arranged for September 25th with the mayor of Paxos, Spyros Bogdanos as principal guest. Food and wine were supplied by Carnayo restaurant, speeches were made, the ribbon was cut, music was played and a good time was had by all! (See New Surgery photo gallery)
