All Creatures Great & Small

PAWS on Paxos mainly deals with stray cats and dogs so we are always delighted when something different presents itself. Pam Burke who has a B&B in Velianitika contacted us at the end of February and asked if we could help re-home 20 baby tortoises! The story begins with 'Big Col' who Pam found at Avlaki creek many years ago. Pam's Dad had died a few days before and Pam immediately felt a connection with this tortoise as her family had always kept them when she was growing up. Big Col is a Herman Tortoise which isn't native to Greece but as you can see from the picture below he is a very handsome chap!

Sadly he went missing for three and a half years from Pam's garden when someone left their gate open, but eventually turned up in Ray & Suzy's garden in Apergatika. Pam of course was delighted and brought him home to join other tortoise friends in their garden which included a couple of small Greek ones. Much to Pam's surprise 20 babies hatched last September which was the largest number in many years. They are now emerging from hibernation and growing into gorgeous infants. So far 9 homes have been found.

We have posted the story on our Facebook page and am sure we can help find homes for the remaining youngsters.

They will need a secure garden and Pam is happy to offer advice about care and feeding.

Please contact PAWS via Facebook or email or ring Di Mitchell or Faye Lychnou if you would like to own one of these beautiful creatures.
